Judge dictates: bakeries must bake for same-sex couples?

The nation is currently undergoing an upheaval of change when it comes to same-sex marriage, one that many argue is long overdue. Colorado same-sex couples are like those in any other state, fighting for the rights that every other couple has: tax benefits, insurance benefits and child custody, among others. While much progress has been made, there is no doubt that there is still quite a journey ahead.

Recently a couple filed a discrimination complaint against a bakery that refused to bake a wedding cake for them. The reason? The couple is gay. The owner of the small business bakery has apparently taken a stance against making wedding cakes for all gay couples, based on religious reasons.

A Colorado state judge handed down a verdict, saying that the baker cannot continue to do business that way. Discriminating against the couple because of their sexual orientation is illegal, according to state law. Many argue that, if bakers are allowed to refuse to provide their services for same-sex weddings -- florists, photographers and caterers could follow suit.

As with any other wedding, Colorado same-sex couples anticipate the day with excitement and joy. The planning is at least half the joy. To have that joy disrupted by discrimination and judgmental people takes away from the celebration that the couple is planning. After all, the day is about celebrating their love, and they want to share that with their friends and family. Naturally they want to do that with all the accouterment of other weddings.
